John Constable is a well loved - and perhaps the best known - painter of English landscapes. He lived in Suffolk from his birth in 1776 until his death in 1837, and painted various scenes in that county. This miniature edition of Constable - Masterpieces in Colour was written by C. Lewis Hind, and published in 1907. As the title indicates, it includes eight of Constable's best known works printed in full color. This miniature edition carries the plates on heavy, smooth paper for the best quality.
The book begins with a look at the year 1824, the year Constable showed perhaps his best know painting of all, "The Hay Wain" - a painting that according to the author marked an epoch in landscape art. The book goes on to discuss Constable's life, his sketches, his pictures, and his personality and opinions. And of course it ends with eight plates of his paintings, with detailed commentories.
Constable consists of 180 pages, with overall dimensions of 76 x 58 mm (3 x 2-5/16 inches). The boards are covered with cloth printed with a picture of Constable's painting "The Cornfield". The book is priced at $45 plus $7 for packing and shipping.
