KNOTS, BENDS, AND SPLICES was written by one Captain James Netherhill Jutsum, sometimes referred to as Skipper Jutsum. Little is known about him except that he was born in Wales on an unknown date, published this book in Glasgow in 1914, and died two years later in London.

The book begins with a chapter on the construction of ropes, then goes on to describe in precise detail how to tie many different knots - in the bight of a rope, for uniting ropes, and by forming on ropes by their own strands. In each case the process is copiously and precisely illustrated.
Knots consists of 180 pages, and includes 141 illustrations, mostly diagrams, with a few photographs.

The book has overall dimensions of 76 x 60 x 18 mm (3 x 2-3/8 x 3/4 inches). The boards are covered with coarse canvas "sail cloth". A pair of ropes around the front cover are joined by a reef knot in the center of the cover. The spine carries a printed title, and the endpapers are decorated with some of the knot illustrations from the book.
The edition is limited to 20 copies, priced at $50 each plus $5 shipping and handling.
