CANDIDE, OR OPTIMISM has been called "one of the 100 most influential books ever written". And all its author, Voltaire, wanted to do was to refute Leibnitz' claim that this is "the best of all possible worlds". The Plum Park Press miniature edition contains the complete text in an English translation, together with a selection of illustrations, mostly from two eighteenth-century French editions.
The binding of the book has been designed to complement the riches-to-rags theme of the story. The front cover represents the beginning of the story, wrapped in a bright red shiny brocade that our hero and heroine might have worn in the Baron's castle. The back cover represents the end of the story, wrapped in a stained, wrinkled, and torn rag. Each endpaper continues the image from its cover.
The PPP edition consists of 260 pages, printed in Bernhard Modern 7/8.5. It has overall dimensions of 76 x 58 x 18 mm (3 x 2-5/16 x 11/16 inches). The edition consists of 20 copies priced at $50 each, plus $5 shipping and handling.
